About Us

The mission of The People and Nature Connection is to present monthly featured profiles to increase the public's appreciation of the world around them. As the website expands, other resources and features will be added. The word "us" is used because this isn't a single-person effort. It takes the cooperation, participation, and support of everyone who is featured as well as those who visits the website. We are all trying to connect people with the world around us. It takes a village to make this work.

Why Would You Want to Be Featured on
The People and Nature Connection?

I believe in #actuallivingscientists and as an educator feel that the work they do should be actively promoted.  I also love art that focuses on nature. There are some wonderful, creative people out there who show us how great the world is through their art.  I search for scientists and artists on social media platforms as well as through personal connections and recommendations.

When you become a featured scientist or artist, your work is promoted on the TPNC social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) pages along with my personal Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and Tumblr pages three times a month. After your month has commenced, your profile is saved as a PDF and placed on the Archive Page.

About Kirsten

Picture

Hi. My name is Kirsten Hope Walker and I am the Founder of The People and Nature Connection. I am a life-long environmental educator with a myriad of experiences in formal and non-formal education.  Environmental education is not just science; it's so much more. It involves history, math, literature, art, consumer economics, physical education, psychology as well as the physical and life sciences.

Growing up in Houston, I fell in love with the natural world. My brothers and I would explore outside from dawn until dusk. There were several acres behind my house and the bayou area had an abundance of wildlife. Anoles were a particular favorite. I would watch them for hours as their dewlap would inflame as a way to ward off predators.

My love of the environment has never changed despite my varied career experiences. I have always taught about nature in some way. I have used my love of learning to gain advanced degrees in education to focus on multiple modalities of teaching and I have applied those to my professional positions. I have an interest in eco-psychology because I love to watch what profound effects nature has on people.

I wanted this website to be about the undeniable connection of people and nature. Along with helpful information on plants and animals, I include people who take a special interest in the environment.  Sarah Livesay has been generous enough to contribute her reviews of nature-related children's books.

The website is meant for a nationwide audience and I am always looking for contributors from different areas of the country. Please contact us if you are interested.

Please ask questions, make comments, or just say hello.
